UA chorus needs singers, especially tenors, basses

Feel like singing?

The University of Arizona Summer chorus could be your outlet.

The chorus, conducted by Josef Knott, is open to all interested singers regardless of age or experience, and you don't have to try out.

The chorus is recruiting singers of all voices, but is especially in need of tenors and basses. The ensemble will rehearse 7-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 146 of the UA Music Building in preparation for the annual "Opera Gala/Choral Concert." The event, scheduled for 3 p.m. June 26 in Centennial Hall, is a concert of operatic arias featuring ensembles and the full chorus. Tickets are $15, wtih discounts available through the Centennial Hall Box Office, 621-3364.

The chorus has been around for more than 50 years. For further information, call Knott at 621-1454.

Colorado funnyman due to earn laughs at Laffs

Colorado comedian Jay Benedict Brown is trading in the cool, crisp mountain air for Tucson's dry heat next week when he headlines Laffs Comedy Caffé Wednesday through June 4.

Brown is one of Denver's top-rated and funniest stand-ups. He's headlined in 31 states and has appeared on TV and in theater productions.

His ha-ha's bring him to Tucson just as the thermometer blows a gasket. He'll share the stage with Latin comedian/juggler Patrick Candelaria. OK, we can't vouch for the accuracy of his juggling and magic skills, but reviews indicate he's pretty-darn funny.

The entertainers perform at 8 p.m Wednesday and next Thursday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. June 3 and 7 and 9:30 p.m. June 4 at Laffs, 2900 E. Broadway. Admission is $6 Wednesday and next Thursday, $9 June 3-4; 323-8669.

Dance company's shows to interpret coyote stories

New ARTiculations Dance Theatre will interpret three American Indian coyote stories during "Trickster and Other Dances" with original music composed by William Campbell at 10 a.m. next Thursday and 8 p.m June 3-4 at the Proscenium Theatre on Pima Community College's West Campus .

"Trickster" involves four sections choreographed by dance-company directors Leigh Ann Rangel and Tammy Rosen.

Campbell will answer questions after the evening shows.

The company will perform Charlotte Adams' "Dichotomy," which has eight dancers and is set to choral music.

In addition, Randy James' "With Waves at My Back" will be reprised.

New ARTiculations Dance Theatre is a professional dance company that offers traditional modern, postmodern, theatrical and interdisciplinary works. Tickets for next week's shows are $12-$14 with discounts available. Call 882-0318 or visit www.newarticulations.org online.
